The Life You Want Usually Doesn't Happen on the Couch...

There’s a whole world happening on the other side of your screen.

People are traveling. Trying new things. Dressing up for ridiculous theme nights. Meeting new friends. Learning skills they never thought they could learn. Performing. Competing. Laughing. Going places. Making memories.

And sometimes, without even realizing it, we spend more time watching other people live their lives than actually living our own.

We scroll through the vacation photos. Watch the reels from someone else’s night out. See someone celebrating an accomplishment and think, That looks like so much fun.

Then we keep scrolling.

But here’s the thing:

The life you want doesn’t usually happen on the couch.

You Don’t Need a Huge Adventure to Start Living More

When we say, “Don’t watch life…live it!”, we don’t mean you need to quit your job, buy a plane ticket and go skydiving tomorrow.

Although, if that’s your thing, we support the drama.

Living your life can mean saying yes to something big. At Dance Life, we’ve had students travel across the world and step onto the floor at the legendary Blackpool Dance Festival in England. We travel together for dance competitions, take dance cruises, explore new cities and are already looking forward to adventures like cruising the Mediterranean.

Those are the big, bucket-list moments.

But some of the best memories start much smaller.

They start with deciding to come to a themed party on a Thursday night.

They start with putting on an outfit you normally wouldn’t wear, walking into a room where you may not know everyone and learning a dance you’ve never tried before.

They start with signing up to participate in a showcase—even though performing in front of people sounds absolutely terrifying.

Or maybe performing isn’t your thing at all. Maybe your version of participating is buying a ticket, coming to the show, cheering ridiculously loudly and supporting people in your own community who were brave enough to get on that floor.

It all counts.

Because living more isn’t measured by how extreme the adventure is. It’s measured by whether you were actually there for it.

Stop Waiting Until You Feel “Ready”

One of the easiest ways to accidentally watch life pass by is to keep waiting for the perfect time.

I’ll do it when I’m more confident.

I’ll try it when I’m in better shape.

I’ll go when I have someone to go with.

Maybe next time.

The problem with “next time” is that it has a sneaky habit of becoming next month, next year and eventually I always wanted to do that.

You don’t have to already be confident to try something new.

Sometimes you try something new and that’s how you become confident.

You don’t have to already know how to dance to walk into a dance studio.

That would be like saying you need to know how to play piano before taking piano lessons.

You just have to be willing to begin.

Your Life Needs Stories

Think about some of your favorite memories.

Chances are, they aren’t the nights you spent scrolling through your phone.

They’re the unexpected moments.

The night you laughed until your stomach hurt.

The trip where something went hilariously wrong.

The first time you tried something and realized you were actually pretty good at it.

The time you dressed completely outside your comfort zone.

The people you met because you decided to go somewhere instead of staying home.

The moment you walked off a dance floor thinking, I cannot believe I just did that.

Those become the stories you tell.

And you need new stories.

Not because every day has to be extraordinary, but because life gets awfully repetitive when we stop giving ourselves things to look forward to.

Ballroom Dancing Is About a Lot More Than Learning Steps

Yes, you’ll learn to Waltz, Salsa, Swing, Tango and plenty more.

But somewhere along the way, something else tends to happen.

Your calendar starts filling up.

There’s a party Friday.

Someone convinces you to participate in the showcase.

You decide to go watch your friends compete.

Then maybe you decide you want to compete.

Suddenly someone is talking about a cruise.

And before you know it, the person who originally walked through the door saying, “I just thought learning to dance might be fun,” has photos, friendships, inside jokes, costumes, adventures and stories they never expected.

Maybe your Dance Life adventure eventually takes you all the way to Blackpool.

Maybe it takes you to the Mediterranean.

Maybe it takes you exactly five minutes down the road to a themed party where you laugh harder than you have in months.

There is no minimum requirement for an adventure.

You just have to show up for it.

Put the Phone Down. Come Make Something Worth Posting About.

Social media can be wonderful. It lets us celebrate each other, stay connected and see incredible things happening all over the world.

But it should inspire your life—not replace it.

So the next time you catch yourself watching someone else travel, dance, perform, make friends, try something new or simply have a really great night, ask yourself:

What am I waiting for?

Take the class.

Buy the ticket.

Wear the outfit.

Come to the party.

Sign up for the showcase.

Cheer for your community.

Learn something completely new.

Take the trip.

Do something that makes you a little nervous.

Do something simply because it sounds fun.

Your next great memory probably isn’t going to find you while you’re sitting on the couch.

Don’t watch life…live it.

Come Live the Dance Life!

Whether you’re ready for your first dance lesson, your first party, your first performance—or eventually an adventure halfway around the world—there’s a place to start.
