Stop Watching Other People Have Fun.
You know the posts.
Someone is at a festival.
Someone is listening to live music.
Someone tried a new restaurant.
Someone went to a show.
Someone dressed up for an event with friends and apparently had the greatest night of their lives.
You watch the Reel. Maybe you hit “like.” Maybe you send it to someone and say, “We should do this sometime!”
And then…you keep scrolling.
Here’s an idea:
Stop watching other people have fun. Go have some yourself.
There’s More Happening Around You Than You Think
Sometimes we convince ourselves that having an interesting life requires an elaborate vacation, an expensive trip or some enormous plan.
It doesn’t.
Sometimes you just need to leave the house.
We’re lucky to call Historic Downtown Panama City home, because there is constantly something happening in and around our community.
There’s live music. Art. Festivals. Restaurants. Local shops. Performances. Markets. Waterfront activities. Seasonal celebrations. Classes. Community organizations. Fundraisers. Special events.
There are opportunities to experience something different practically in our own backyard.
The question is: Are you going?
Be a Participant in Your Community
A vibrant community doesn’t happen because a bunch of buildings happen to be located next to each other.
It happens because people participate.
People buy tickets to local performances.
They show up for festivals.
They listen to local musicians.
They walk into a locally owned business they’ve never visited before.
They take a class.
They browse an art gallery.
They eat somewhere new.
They volunteer.
They support a fundraiser.
They invite their friends to come along.
They actually attend the event they clicked “Interested” on three weeks ago.
That last one may have been directed at all of us.
When people participate, a city becomes more than the place where they live.
It becomes their community.
There’s a Lot to Explore in Downtown Panama City
Historic Downtown Panama City has become the kind of place where you can make an entire evening out of simply deciding to go Downtown and see what happens.
Grab dinner somewhere you haven’t tried.
Walk Harrison Avenue.
Explore local art.
Catch some live music.
Meet friends for a drink.
Attend a festival.
Watch a performance.
Take a class.
Walk down toward the waterfront.
Find something you didn't know was there.
And throughout the year, our community calendar gives us even more reasons to get out of the house—concerts, Oktoberfest, art events, seasonal celebrations, the Songwriters Festival, the Boat Parade of Lights and plenty more.
You don't necessarily need a complicated itinerary.
Sometimes the plan can simply be:
“Want to meet Downtown?”
Support Local Fun If You Want More Local Fun
There’s another side to getting involved that we don’t talk about enough.
When you attend a local event, you’re doing more than entertaining yourself.
You’re supporting the people who made it happen.
When you buy a ticket to a local show, you’re supporting performers, organizers and venues.
When you eat at a locally owned restaurant, you’re supporting the people who built that business.
When you attend a festival, shop from a vendor, listen to a local musician or participate in a fundraiser, you’re helping create demand for more things like it.
If we want a community with interesting things to do, we have to actually do the interesting things.
That means showing up.
You Don't Have to Know Everyone
This is a big one.
Sometimes people skip community activities because they think:
I don't have anyone to go with.
I won't know anybody.
That doesn't seem like “my crowd.”
Go anyway.
You might be surprised by how quickly strangers become familiar faces when you start participating in your community.
That’s actually one of the things we see all the time at Dance Life.
Someone comes to a class alone.
Then they recognize someone at a party.
Then they see that person at another event.
Then somebody invites somebody somewhere.
And eventually, the person who once worried about walking through the door alone has an entire group of people they wouldn't have met if they had stayed home.
Community is built by showing up repeatedly.
Fun Doesn't Have to Be Productive
Adults are very good at making everything useful.
We exercise for our health.
We network for our careers.
We take classes to improve our skills.
We run errands because something needs to get done.
But when was the last time you did something for the highly sophisticated purpose of…
it sounded fun?
Go hear the band because you like music.
Dress up for the themed event because you want an excuse to wear something ridiculous.
Take the dance class because you've always wondered if you could.
Go to the art event because it looks interesting.
Buy the ticket because you want to see the show.
Meet your friends Downtown because it's Tuesday and that's reason enough.
Not everything needs to become an accomplishment.
Sometimes a great night is enough.
Your Community Is Happening Right Now
There will always be another video to watch.
Another Reel.
Another person on vacation.
Another photo dump from somebody else's fantastic weekend.
But while you're watching everyone else's highlight reel, there are real people right outside your door making music, creating art, opening businesses, teaching classes, organizing events, putting on shows and trying to build something special in the place you call home.
Go see them.
Better yet, join them.
At Dance Life, we're proud to be one small piece of the energy of Historic Downtown Panama City. Whether we're hosting a dance party, putting on a showcase, teaching someone their very first dance step or heading out into the community ourselves, we believe life gets a lot more interesting when you participate in it.
So check the local calendar.
Call your friends.
Buy the ticket.
Try the restaurant.
See the show.
Take the class.
Walk Downtown.
And the next time you see a post from a local event and think,
“That looks like fun…”
Don't just watch it.
Go have some fun yourself.
