Dancing at the 100th Anniversary Blackpool Dance Festival: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience

There are ballroom dance competitions, and then there is Blackpool.

For dancers around the world, the Blackpool Dance Festival represents the pinnacle of ballroom dancing. It is the oldest and most prestigious ballroom dance competition in the world—a place where legends have danced, champions have been crowned, and history has been made for over a century.

This year was especially significant as we had the incredible honor of attending the 100th Anniversary Blackpool Dance Festival, a milestone event that celebrated one hundred years of ballroom dance history.

For our team, simply stepping onto that floor was something we will never forget.

Walking Into Ballroom Dance History

The first time you enter the Empress Ballroom, it's difficult to put the feeling into words.

Photos don't do it justice.

The ballroom itself is breathtaking. The famous sprung dance floor seems to stretch endlessly across the room beneath an ornate gold ceiling that feels more like a palace than a competition venue. Every detail reminds you that you are standing in one of the most iconic ballrooms in the world.

As dancers, we've watched videos of Blackpool for years. We've seen the greatest champions dance there. We've dreamed about what it would feel like.

Then suddenly, you're not watching anymore.

You're standing on that floor yourself.

Dancing to the Empress Orchestra

One of the most magical aspects of Blackpool is that competitors dance to live music performed by the world-renowned Empress Orchestra.

In today's world, most competitions use recorded music. Dancing to a live orchestra is an entirely different experience.

The music feels alive.

The energy fills the room in a way that's difficult to describe. Every rise, every accent, every phrase feels more connected and expressive.

It's one of those experiences that reminds you why ballroom dancing is considered both a sport and an art form.

For many of us, dancing to the Empress Orchestra was a dream come true.

The Atmosphere Was Electric

One thing that surprised many members of our group was just how much energy filled the ballroom.

The cheering was constant.

Friends, family members, fellow competitors, and spectators filled the room with encouragement and support. Every round seemed to bring more excitement, more applause, and more enthusiasm.

Even though competitors come from all over the world, there was an incredible sense of shared appreciation for the event.

Everyone knew they were participating in something special.

The positive energy was contagious.

The Nerves Were Real

Of course, with an event of this magnitude comes a healthy dose of nerves.

Even experienced competitors felt the butterflies.

When you're about to step onto the most famous ballroom dance floor in the world, it's hard not to feel the weight of the moment.

You know how much preparation went into getting there.

You know how many dancers dream of that opportunity.

You know the history that surrounds you.

The nerves were definitely real.

But so was the excitement.

And ultimately, the overwhelming feeling was gratitude.

What a privilege it was to be there.

A Different Competition Experience

One of the interesting challenges we encountered was adapting to the way Blackpool operates.

American competitions tend to move quickly and follow systems that most of us are very familiar with. Blackpool has its own traditions, procedures, and organizational style.

At first, it required some adjustment.

Things didn't always move at the pace we were accustomed to, and there was definitely a learning curve when it came to understanding how everything worked.

But that's also part of the experience.

When you travel internationally, you learn to embrace differences, stay flexible, and appreciate the traditions that make an event unique.

More Than a Competition

While the dancing was undoubtedly the highlight, we also made sure to experience everything Blackpool had to offer.

When we weren't competing, our group explored the town together.

We visited the famous Blackpool Tower, enjoyed meals at a variety of local restaurants, tackled an escape room challenge, watched a live show, and even enjoyed dinner overlooking the beach.

Those moments became some of our favorite memories.

Competitions are wonderful, but sharing adventures with teammates and friends makes the experience even richer.

First Trains, New Adventures

For several members of our group, the trip brought plenty of firsts.

Believe it or not, some had never ridden a train before.

The United Kingdom's rail system quickly became one of our favorite ways to travel. It was comfortable, efficient, and made it easy to move between cities while enjoying the scenery along the way.

It's amazing how travel experiences often become just as memorable as the destination itself.

A Quick Trip to London

After our time in Blackpool, we packed as much sightseeing as possible into a day and a half in London.

And when we say packed, we mean packed.

We explored Chinatown, rode the London Eye, and took a sightseeing bus tour through the city.

But one experience stood above the rest.

Afternoon Tea on the Thames

If there was one activity that everyone seemed to agree was a highlight, it was afternoon tea aboard a river cruise on the Thames.

How British can you get?

Enjoying tea, sandwiches, pastries, and incredible views while floating through the heart of London was an unforgettable experience.

It allowed us to see many of London's iconic landmarks from a completely different perspective.

For many of us, it became one of the most memorable moments of the entire trip.

A Century of Ballroom Excellence

The 100th Anniversary Blackpool Dance Festival was more than a competition.

It was a celebration of ballroom dance history.

It was a reminder of the traditions that have shaped our industry for generations.

It was an opportunity to share experiences with teammates, friends, and fellow dancers from around the world.

Most importantly, it was a privilege.

To dance to the Empress Orchestra.

To step onto the iconic floor of the Empress Ballroom.

To experience the energy, excitement, and history of Blackpool during its centennial celebration.

These are memories we will carry with us for the rest of our lives.

And while the medals, placements, and results are certainly important, the greatest reward was simply being part of such an extraordinary chapter in ballroom dance history.

Here's to the next hundred years.
